National Running Day

Today is National Running Day!  I found a running survey on a blog I have been reading a lot lately (www.hungryrunnergirl.com) and decided I'd fill it out for today, so enjoy that below.

I ran 6.1 miles this morning.  It was perfect running weather this morning and I ran into my friend Jon who was waiting for the bus to whisk him away to the magical world of public accounting so I stopped to chat for a bit.  Luckily I'm not quite as sore any more and the run felt good.

1.  On average how many races do you run a year?

Probably 3 or 4.  This year so far I ran the Chase Corporate Challenge and the North Shore Half Marathon.  I plan to run the Arlington Heights Stampede Run 5k in July and the Chicago Marathon of course.  And I definitely can't forget the Edison Park Turkey Trot - a yearly tradition.

All the pieces of the Bandit Turkey Tiger costumes came together for Catherine and I at the 2012 Edison Park Turkey Trot!

2.  Head accessories, things you have to run with:  a hat, a visor, sunglasses, chapstick, sunscreen, head band, ponytail, braids, sweat band?

Well the turkey headband obviously trumps all others, but I always wear some type of headband.  I like to wear a hat when I run in the ran.  But no matter what, my hair is always in a ponytail.

3.  Where do your workouts come from?  A training plan, a coach, whatever you feel like doing that day or what your training partner is doing that day?

It's pretty much been whatever I feel like doing that day, but I made my own marathon plan (based off of a lot of other plans I looked at and what I read online) so I'll be following that starting Monday.

4.  How many miles on average do you put on a pair of shoes

I'm not entirely sure - I should probably keep track.  I just got my new pair of shoes for marathon training.  I want to be able to wear them in the race also, so I'll probably alternate between my current pair and the new pair for a little while and then switch over completely a little later on in the summer.

5.  Cell phone=  do you bring it with you on your run or leave it at home?

I leave it at home.  I do bring my old iPhone though, which I just use for music.

6.  What was your last running related injury or have you been an injury free runner?

My worst running injury was senior year of college in December when I strained a muscle in weight lifting I believe and it continuously hurt for months.  Other than that, I've been pretty injury free.  Last summer I got hit by a biker while running on the lakefront path.  That was pretty painful.

7.  Is your current running goal about running a farther distance (adding more mileage) or getting faster or BOTH?!?

BOTH I'd say.  Technically I don't plan to run farther than a marathon, which is a distance I've already ran before...but I'd like to increase my weekly mileage over what I've done before.  And I want to get faster of course.

8.  Speedwork—->  at the track, on the treadmill, on the roads or never do it?

I haven't done real speedwork in awhile.  I guess it would depend on what the workout is.  I'd probably like to use a track.  The treadmill I'd only use if the weather was bad.

9.  Stretching after a run:  hit the ground after a run and get stretching, stretch in the shower, stretch once you get to work/school, skip the stretching?

I don't stretch nearly enough...or at all basically.  I've been getting home and getting straight in the shower.  Maybe I should get up earlier.

10.  What was your reason(S) for starting to run?

Because all the cool kids were doing it in 7th grade.

  1. LOVE that the bandit turkey tiger costumes made an appearance!!! I also love that today was my cross-training day since my legs are still really sore from Tuesday (track intervals+leg weights is going to be a rough combo every week). I did 40 minutes on the spin bike with some high speed/high resistant intervals in the middle, and then did an hour of arm weights and some core with the trainer at work. My arms were already sore while blowdrying my hair, so it was a good one.
